Hi Heidi - I know what you mean; I'm perpetually behind with my RSS feeds.

I think there may actually be right around 29 palms there - it's not a very big area, and I doubt there's water to support too many palms.

The Costas, along with the Scott's Oriole, were the avian highlight of this day, for sure.

Hi Adam!
I'm nowhere near catching up on the Google Reader, but figure today I'll concentrate on your blog, so expect to see a comment on the next few posts of yours as well :)

What a wonderful place to hike! I never knew 29 Palms referred to an oasis in the area. I'll bet by now, unless the Park Management remove the excess, that there are much more than 29 Palms in that spot.

Fantastic list of flora and fauna. Fantastic opportunity and capture of the male and female Costa's Hummingbird together!

Your trip sounds like fun - I look forward to reading about it on your & Heidi's blogs. The Scott's Oriole was one of my favorite lifers of this trip (after the Vermillion Flycatchers and baby Long-eared Owls).

We just returned from a short (almost a week) trip to Mesa, AZ, and visited the Boyce Thompson Arboretum. Most of their plants had their IDs listed with a sign, but one of them was a red "leaved" cactus, which you now have identified for me - the desert barrel cactus. That is so cool to have seen costa's hummers and an orchard oriole. At the arboretum there were so many birds and butterflies - and no one would sit still long enough for a decent photo. Heidi (MMATM) and I will probably be posting it on our blogs in the next couple of weeks. My photos were almost exclusively flora, and Heidi will have mostly the bird and butterfly photos. We'll have to be sure to consider that oasis trail if we should ever get to Joshua Tree.

There are several large parts of the park (the NE & S areas) that are not Mojave Desert, and Joshua Trees are quite particular - they ONLY grow in the Mojave.

We should have counted the palms to check their accuracy, but did not.

Well, I'll be damned -- no Joshua Trees in the park?
They'll be hearing from my attorneys...

And double-damned -- there actually IS a Twenty-Nine Palms Oasis! Amazing... Interesting photos...
