Sequoia bottom

Tall Tree!

B&W Trees

Unlucky little fly

Giant Sequoia

Moss on bark

Split Sequoia

More big trees

Wonder why they call them “redwoods”?

Perhaps “orangewoods” is more apt here

Moss detail

Tree trunk reflection
A “ghastly, disfigured ruin” – John Muir (see here and here for details)
“Drive-through tree” – another stupid human trick
Post-hike wine-tasting at Stevenot Winery in Murphys – oh yes!

Does anyone else see the old lady of the tree in picture #5?
Or is it just me and I’m nuts?
Great images Adam… and of course I’d expect no less. I’ve wine-tasted at Stevenot as well. Yum
Have you tried Twisted Oak? I haven’t yet, just heard about it recently.
Thanks! We haven’t been to Twisted Oak yet. Actually there are a lot of wineries around Murphys that we haven’t been to. We usually just go to Stevenot & Bodega del Sur (formerly Com e Bella) since we know we like them.
Stunning. Oh, I want to see those trees someday…
They’re awesome to be sure. Although I’ve done this hike probably close to 100 times, I never tire of treading among these giants
I love to see those trees!
You & me both
Super nice shots…
And the Big Trees is a place I haven’t been since I was a kid… And yep, my father was pissed about having to pay money to do it, but we drove our 1947 Pontiac through the “Drive-Thru” tree… I agree totally, but got a chuckle at how you put it: “stupid human tricks”…
I’ve driven or been driven through a few of the drive through trees too (there are at least 3 that I know of in CA, one still drive-through’able). Relics of a different era, thankfully
awesome! loved the b&ws
Thanks, Ankush!
Interesting that Red pointed out the old woman in picture #5. I never would have noticed it if she hadn’t referred to it. Chalk it up to creative imagination. Nice going, Red! Funny how I don’t think I’ve ever been to Big Trees, but I have seen the sequoias in Sequoia Nat Park. They are so awesome. My opinion of those “stupid human tricks” — that was a good way to “advertise” some of Mother Nature’s best features, especially during those days when travel and vacationing were not the norm. Those were the days when preservation and conservation were not your ordinary everyday vocabulary. We are a much better educated population nowadays – yet I still see a lot of stupidity going on. ;o)
Yeah, I didn’t notice it until she mentioned it either.
I agree with you inasmuch as the several drive through trees did serve in some way to get people interested in nature, but IMO the skinned “Mother of the Forest” (the “Ruin” above) is totally inexusable. Even in that less conservation-minded time, people were outraged that the tree was skinned alive.
Great shots Adam, and I thought the giant sycamore in my backyard was big (118′) it wouldn’t even be half their height !!
I also see the women in the image, neat shots !!
Thanks, Bernie! Funny that folks are seeing a woman – I sort of do now, but certainly didn’t when I composed the image!
Amazing Wood Photos!
Thanks, Tom!
