   incredible jellyfish photos! as i was paging down i was thinking “what flash was he using” and then you showed that one where there was plenty of light so i guess no flash was needed! awesome I’ll have to splurge for the $30-$40 ticket to get in one of these days. It’s been ages since I’ve been there. I think the last time was a field trip in college.

   oh and those funky fish are awesome too… if i had a fish tank, i’d want one of them.

   ScienceGuy: Hmm, reference lost on me – haven’t read much Steinbeck. It’s a fantastic aquarium – one of the best. Be sure to visit if you’re ever in the area.

   Heidi: There wasn’t much light at all in most of the rooms at the aquarium. I set my camera to its highest ISO rating for most of the time, and I broght 2 lenses that have very wide apertures (a 50mm f/1.4 & 28mm f/1.8 if you care), and even still my keeper rate wasn’t all that high. Flash poses 2 problems in this type of environment: 1) some creatures are very light-sensitive, and can be harmed by sudden bursts of light (eg. octopuses) and 2) unless you have the flash totally off-camera, it’s likely to create a tremendous glare off of the tank walls. The beautiful jellyfish exhibit is closing in a couple of weeks, and being replaced by a seahorse exhibit, which should be great too.

   Incredible photos. Really wonderful.

   Our family recently saw a documentary on Monteray Bay Aquarium and have put it on our list of places to go. Your photos seem like almost being there.
